What is a chakra check-up?
We are all familiar with a basic doctor’s check-up: the stethoscope and the deep breaths to check out the lungs, the patellar reflex test on the knee to test for good neurological functioning, etc.
As a holistic healer, I also like to start with a full-body check up of an energetic sort. When I enter a client’s energy field, I can feel in my own body whether any of his or her chakras are full. If a chakra is full, or closed, then that person feels stuck. They know there is a problem, but they literally don’t have any energy flowing into the problem to help them move forward. I like to use the word full because while people usually envision chakras like wheels, I sometimes imagine them like drinking glasses. When a glass is already full of water, it doesn’t matter how much more water you pour in, because the glass is full and can’t accept any more. Only by emptying the glass—or in this case, clearing the chakra—can it function as the receptor it is supposed to be.
Each chakra has a location in the body and correlates to a specific existential question. There is loads of information on the internet about chakras, so if you want to know more about them and their Sanskrit names and what therapeutic techniques are helpful to clear them, google away.
For my purposes, however, a quick chakra check gives me valuable insight about All The Things. Here’s a quick rundown of what I learn in my chakra checkups.
Root chakra: Does this person feel physically and financially safe and secure? Are they comfortable with where they live, and how much money they have? People in transition, moving houses or countries or jobs, or with a lot of financial concerns often have full root chakras.
Sacral Chakra: Does this client feel able to express his or her creativity and sexuality in an open and comfortable way?
Solar Plexus Chakra: Does this client feel clear about his or her life’s work and purpose? Are they spending their time in ways that feel meaningful and align with what they want to be doing?
Heart Chakra: Does this client currently have relationships that feel nurturing, intimate and safe?
Throat Chakra: Can this client effectively and comfortably communicate about things/ideas/relationships/concerns that are important to them?
Brow Chakra: Are they able to use all their senses, and sometimes their extrasensory intuitions, to perceive, understand, and process the world, or are they living in a fantasy that is guided by internal thoughts and feelings rather than external reality?
Crown Chakra: Is this client open to having a relationship with the Infinite? Are they able to perceive G-d’s presence even when they feel lost, stuck, or abandoned, or have they lost the ability to sense the underlying order, justice and beauty in the universe?
With a yes or no answer to each of these questions, I usually get a pretty good, if rough sense of the kinds of issues that I can be most helpful with in a healing session.
